Large turtles are nesting hundred and more eggs into a sand hole which they dig with their last power.

A nature show you will never forget.

Tip

Take some water and a torch with you. Timing depends on the nature and sometimes nesting is a hard long way for the turtles.

What to discover

Pure untouched river nature with a lot of animals, especially various kind of birds, and plants to discover. 

Nobody to disturb your cruise through a tunnel of nature and water.

You can go all the way to the spring area of the river. While in the other direction you can pass under the Gall Road bridge and further to the beach for a rest.

For example the awesome Ariyapala Mask Museum & Workshop in Ambalangoda might be best fit for you.

WHAT to discover

It is one of the greatest places where you can discover local art design and production.  In the 7th generation this place is nice and authentic museum and workshop for traditional masks and puppets. 

Guidance are offered for free.

Within the workshop you will be shown how a mask of a tree trunk is carved out. And further treated to become a real Sri Lankan traditional mask.

Later on, you can buy the one or other mask in the shop.  Or just give a voluntary donation for this great tour if you feel happy.

Kande Viharaya Historical Temple

Kande Viharaya (Mountain Temple)is famous for its big buddha statue, but it also has couple of more temples in the same area.

This temple is a major place and very famous among Sri Lankans.

WHAT to discover

Take a tour to the Kande Viharaya Temple to visit this historic site in Dharga Town.

It’s better to go to this place an hour or two before sunset, plan to spend around 3 hours. You will have enough time to walk around and look at all the different buildings and places, next take a walk around the old Bodhi tree and sit down at sunset time for the monks prayers.

Our guides from Bombay Bicycle Club are passionate about sharing all knowledge about the history, the philosophy of Buddhism and the different religions with you. 

Don’t forget to buy near the parking place the proper items for a real temple visit experience. You should have oil, wicks, flowers (they are so great always) and incense sticks.

This amazing mountain temple is topped by one of the tallest sitting Buddha statues in the world. 

tip

Dress code for visiting a temple: please wear long clothes. A jeans, a long dress or use a scarf. Just make sure that you are fully covered.

Special tip: At the exit before walking down from the mountain there is soft ice cream available. Always yummy as a reward after the temple visit.

A fun river tour with family or friends. 

The Madu River Safari is a popular activity in the area.

WHAT to discover

This tour takes around two to three hours and provides you with the chance to travel the secret passages of the mangrove forests and discover some out of 64 islands like the bird island, cinnamon island, fish-spa island and temple island.

You will spot some tropical birds and a few crocodiles if we’re lucky.

Every now and then a small boat stops next to you where you get the opportunity to hold a baby monkey and or a baby freshwater crocodile in your arms.

Take sunscreen, enough water and some money for the various little attractions made by local people with you!

Sri Lanka was one of the most affected by the wave in 2004. 

Nearly 50,000 people died, 10,000 went missing and 500,000 became homeless.

WHAT to discover

Especially, the people at the coastline were left with nothing after the decline of the water. Where once had been houses, there were only rubble heaps. The story will be told by the owner of the museum, who previously lived at the exact same spot where the museum stands today before the tsunami.

Not only show the photos rubble piles, destroyed roads and vehicles but also the people who fell victim to the tidal wave. This visit lets you imagine the unimaginable event and empathize with the all the people having to go through such a catastrophy.

The museum is free of charge but there is a donation box for voluntary donations. 

After the museum we will stop at the Tsunami monument & Buddha statue.

Hikkaduwa is close by and you can enjoy a beach bar, shopping or swimming with the turtles at Hikkaduwa beach.

What to discover

A traditional catamaran safari at the best times of the day – the blue or golden hours before the sun rises or sets.

It is such a romantic atmosphere around these times – very beautiful.You just have to go behind the pool house of our resort to get on the traditional catamaran in the Kosgoda River at 5am or 5pm.

Enjoy a quiet, peaceful ride on this river and watch the wildlife in nature.

For sunset we will stop at the beach to watch it and take some souvenir photos.

The highlight is when after its getting dark hundreds of white birds are flying to a special plant by the river to save a spot for spending the night there.

You will also see some bats which fly across the river and other animals at chance.

It’s really a must see & must do while staying with us!
